◆ Parental Censorship

>> what’s wrong with the person saying a parent should be able to control their childs intakes? /gq

>>i want to see both povs because i’m just confused. it’s a parent who decides how they want to raise their kid, yes. but i also understand that a parent can brainwash their kids into thinking a specific way (forgot the big word for it)

Because when someone believes that a parent should be able to control their child’s reading material, that means:

👉 they can restrict them from ever seeing material that shows queer or trans characters or depicts being queer or trans in a positive light.

👉They can restrict their access to sex education.

👉they can restrict them from ever learning about science and medicine that disagrees with their parents faith.

👉they can restrict them from reading any books that would help an abused child realize that their situation is abnormal and abusive.

any time a parent wants to restrict the reading material a child has access to, it is about exerting control on a child and forcing that child to conform to the parent’s worldview, rather than allowing the child to build their own understanding of the world.

Any time a parent controls what reading material their child has access to it is about controlling their child’s mind.

◆ Fiction and harm

by admin on December 1, 2023 at 7:25 pm
Posted In: affirmations, freedom of expression

‼️ Fiction cannot cause physical harm to someone.

‼️ The only person who should have the power to decide if a piece of fiction is harming you emotionally or psychologically is you.

‼️ Any fiction you feel like you are being harmed by you can stop reading/watching/creating it at any time.

‼️ You are always in control when you are consuming or creating fiction.

‼️ Do not surrender the power to decide what fictional ideas might cause you emotional or psychological harm to other people.

‼️ No one will ever know better than you what ideas are harmful to you personally.

‼️ You cannot decide what is psychologically or emotionally harmful to another person.

‼️ Attempting to restrict the kind of fiction that people create or consume because you think it might cause them emotional or psychological harm is authoritarian.

‼️ It is safe to explore any ideas and themes in fiction. Fiction does not and cannot cause physical harm to any person. You are always in control of the fiction you are creating or consuming.

◆ What matters

by admin on December 1, 2023 at 7:06 pm
Posted In: affirmations, on writing

Things that don‘t matter when you’re writing a story:

  • what will critics and detractors say about this?
  • is this as marketable as I can possibly make this?

Things that do matter when you’re writing a story:

  • is this story meaningful for me, the author, to write?
  • is this the story that I want to be writing?

◆ The fiction you write is valuable

by admin on December 1, 2023 at 4:55 pm
Posted In: affirmations, on writing

❣️ The fiction you write is valuable and important.

❣️ No one else can write the story you came up with the same way that you would.

❣️ No story idea is totally original, it’s okay to tell a story that’s similar to another and do it your own way.

❣️ You bring meaning and ideas to your story that no one else would put there.

❣️ No story will ever be liked by everyone and that’s okay.

❣️ Its okay to put elements, ideas, themes, characters and events in your fiction that you know some people wouldn’t like.

❣️ What’s important is that you write YOUR story the way you want to write it.

❣️ Who cares what anyone else says, write your story.

◆ Disgusting to me…

by admin on December 1, 2023 at 4:51 pm

“I don’t want to read this” is totally valid.

“This is disgusting to me” is totally valid.

“I don’t want to read this because it is disgusting to me” is totally valid.

“I don’t think anyone should be allowed to read or write this because it is disgusting to me” is authoritarian.
